TABLECLOTH MATH · BEFORE THE FIRST CUT

The right drop.
A clearer cut.

Start with your table and the overhang you want. See the finished cloth size, hem allowance and a raw cut size that accounts for your expected fabric shrinkage.

Choose the drop and finish

Hem allowance is the total flat width consumed at each edge after shrinkage. Enter your measured expected shrinkage in each direction; use 0 for already settled fabric. Uniform shrinkage is assumed.

Optional fabric-width check

Uses straight rectangular panels and may rotate the blank. Grain, pattern repeats, nap, shrinkage variation and seam placement are not designed here.

THREE SIZES, THREE DIFFERENT JOBS

Finished.

Table dimensions plus twice the chosen drop give the outer size you want after the hems are complete.

Settled.

Add the full hem allowance at both opposing edges. This is the fabric size after shrinkage, before hemming.

Raw cut.

Divide by the fraction expected to remain after shrinkage. A 5% loss needs division by 0.95, rather than adding 5%.
